Machine lighting — visual safety per EN 1837

Lighting requirements in CNC machining centres, special-purpose machines and automation. EN 1837, illuminance levels, vibration resistance and form factors.

Lighting as a safety function of the machine

Machine-integrated lighting is not just comfort but a safety-relevant function. EN 1837 (Safety of machinery — integral lighting of machines) is the relevant standard for its design. It defines minimum illuminance values at the point of work:

  • 500 lux — minimum for non-critical visual work at the machine
  • 1,000 lux — standard for typical machining and visual inspection tasks
  • 1,500 lux and above — fine mechanical work, tool change, first-piece inspection

It is not only the average value that matters but also the uniformity (U₀ ≥ 0.7) and glare control. Light sources with a high direct-glare component disqualify themselves for machine workstations regardless of the absolute illuminance.

Form factors for industrial machine integration

Machine builders typically integrate luminaires in one of three form factors:

  • Tube luminaires — narrow body, ideal for long machining areas along the Z axis or at the work-area ceiling.
  • Low-profile surface-mount — small build height, magnetically or screw-mounted, coolant-proof.
  • Signal luminaires — combine illumination with status indication (e.g. white = running, red = fault), coupled to the machine control.

For integration, vibration resistance per IEC 60068-2-6 and EMC per EN 61000-6-2 (industrial environment) are mandatory — otherwise light failure or control disturbance under harsh operating conditions becomes likely.

Mechanical protection inside the work area

Chips fly with high kinetic energy inside a machine tool's work area. Light covers made of standard acrylic rarely withstand it permanently. Established options are:

  • Polycarbonate (PC) with splinter protection — tough, shatter-resistant, more prone to clouding at UV/high temperature.
  • Tempered borosilicate glass — heat- and scratch-resistant, higher weight, low maintenance.

Mechanical protection is rated by the IK class (IEC 62262) — IK08 (5 joule) is a common industrial minimum, IK10 (20 J) for unprotected mounting inside the work area.
