6 tips for extending the service life of your industrial LED luminaires

Marketing claims 100,000 hours — in practice six concrete factors determine how long your LED luminaires actually last. What you as an operator can influence.

Tip 1 — Quality beats price

A €50 LED luminaire and a €250 one often have the same datasheet output — but rarely the same service life. The difference lies in the driver, in heat dissipation and LED binning. Branded products declare service life with a population value (e.g. L80B10 at 50,000 h); no-name products often only marketing figures without a B-value.

Practical test before a large order: check the datasheet for both an L-value AND a B-value. If not stated — stay away.

Tip 2 — Match the form factor to the environment

An IP20 luminaire in a dust-filled joinery does not last two years. Choose by environment:

  • Dry rooms: IP20 is enough
  • Workshop with dust / sawdust: IP54 minimum
  • CNC with coolant aerosol: IP67, ideally IP69K
  • Food / pharma with wash-down: IP69K + stainless steel
  • Cold storage / freezer chambers: dedicated driver with extended temperature range

An over-specified IP rating costs more — but pays off in service life.

Tip 3 — Position and heat dissipation

LEDs age temperature-dependently. Rule of thumb: every 10 °C higher junction temperature halves the service life. When mounting:

  • No luminaires directly above heat sources, weld seams or hot machine components
  • Maintain minimum distance to the ceiling per datasheet (typically ≥ 5 cm on large high-bay luminaires)
  • Do not obstruct the passive heat dissipation area on recessed luminaires
  • For ambient temperatures permanently > 40 °C, choose luminaires with extended Tj range

Tip 4 — Stable power supply

Industrial mains are rarely ideal. Voltage spikes from frequency inverters, contactors or welders damage LED drivers. Protection:

  • Surge protection (SPD) in the feed line — Class III per IEC 61643 is standard for industrial luminaires
  • EMC filter on installations with high-power VFDs nearby
  • Separate sensitive circuits — do not run lighting on the same transformer as large motors
  • Stable 24 V rails for DC luminaires — supply with active load sharing, not linear regulators

Tip 5 — Clean regularly

A soiled light cover can transmit 20–40 % less light after one year. The driver compensates and works harder — shortening service life.

Cleaning intervals by environment:

  • Office / clean: every 24 months
  • Workshop: every 12 months
  • Welding / dust: every 6 months
  • Food / pharma: after each wash-down (daily / weekly)

Important: no aggressive solvents on PMMA optics — plastic clouds. Get material-specific cleaning instructions from the manufacturer.

Tip 6 — Repair instead of replace

If only the driver fails, the LED source is usually still fine — and vice versa. Modular branded luminaires are repairable; no-name products are often glued as one piece and can only be replaced as a whole.

Check before buying:

  • Are spare parts available (driver, LED module, optic, gasket)?
  • How long does the manufacturer guarantee spare-part supply? Branded suppliers often deliver 10+ years.
  • Is there a repair service?

A driver replacement on a €200 branded spotlight costs about €30. A €50 no-name luminaire is replaced wholesale — and the waste ends up as hazardous material.
